Game engine CryEngine V launches with 'pay what you want' model

Crytek has revealed the latest iteration of itsgame development platform CryEngine, and is releasing it through a community-centric "pay what you want" model.
The engine, which is available now, offers full access to all features and the complete source code. Creators using it are asked to pay "a fee of their choosing". Crytek itself doesn't set a recommended amount, and won't even ask for royalties or additional service charges for games made in the software.
It gets better -- users who do contribute can decide where some of their money goes, allocating up to 70 percent to Crytek's new Indie Development Fund. This is the grant program that the German publisher will use to support "promising indie projects around the world".
So, how will Crytek actually monetise the CryEngine? Enter the new CryEngine Marketplace. Taking a cue from Unity, this will sell individual assets from Crytek's own gaming library that can be modified and used in original titles. It will also allow community members and "trusted vendors" to post and sell assets such as materials, sounds, and 3D models.
